For this week’s discussion I choose the Carnival celebrated in Mexico as my celebration.Carnaval, an official Mexican holiday that kicks off a five-day celebration of the libido before the Catholic Lent. Beginning the weekend before Lent, Carnavalis celebrated with parades, floats, music anddancing in the streets. This festival lets people enjoy themselves and lets them indulge in excess drinks and foods as the fasting begins to happen. During this Lent, people participate by giving up eating meats, dairy, fats, and sugars to remember Christ and all of his suffering and self-control he gave spending in thedesert. The Latin phrase ‘Carne Vale’ means saying goodbye to meats. Since people have to get rid of their rich foods by Ash Wednesday, they have large feasts leading up to Lent. The American tradition to this would be Mardi Gras which is largely celebrated in New Orleans. The last day of the carnival is called Mardi Gras.
