CONTROVERSIAL ISSUES2Controversial IssuesThe American Counseling Association (ACA) presents a mission that states “It was formed to help promote professional development of counselors, advocate for the counseling profession and ensure ethical, culturally-inclusive practices which protect those utilizing counseling services”. All members of the ACA know that diversity is a shared encounter within the association and, therefore, holds cross-cultural practices to support the firm’s mission[Ass14]. Professional Counselors should never impose their own values as it is an ethical issue when counseling clients. Professional Counselors are to hold their own personal values, personal beliefs and individual morals to themselves, especially when working with a wide range of clients. Sharing this info can put you at liability of a multitude of problems that include harm to the individuals you are working with [Cor]. Some difference between values, ethics, and laws are that values are instilled in you as a person on how you grow up as an individual and how you were raised. Every person has different values. Ethics were established by an association that you are required to follow as a professional. The laws set forth for these codes are governed and each professional is required to follow them legally. The ACA Code of Ethics were established for professional guidance (ACA, 2014). In my work field it is important I follow the ACA Code of ethics for guidance in not sharing my own personal beliefs, values and morality with my consumers. I am there to help guide my consumers to live a happy life and sharing my own personal beliefs will not help them.
