Week 4, Discussion 1: Adjustable, Assignments, Compacting and Grouping How are adjustable assignments, compacting, and grouping used in differentiated instruction? Provide a brief summary of each, as well as a strategy for implementing each technique discussed in the reading. Imagine that you are providing professional development on these topics. Which strategies from your reading would you use? Which strategies would you omit if time constraints did not permit you to use all of them? How would you assess the understanding and implementation of the training? How are adjustable assignments, compacting, and grouping used in differentiated instruction? Provide a brief summary of each, as well as a strategy for implementing each technique discussed in the reading . Adjustable assignments allow teachers to help students focus on essential skills and understanding key concepts, recognizing that they may be at different levels of readiness. The activities better ensure that students explore ideas at their levels, while building on prior knowledge and experiencing incremental growth. The strategy that can be used with this instruction could be some method of pre-assessment, such as, quizzes, journal writing, class discussions and data collection, learning profiles). The teachers gather data to determine the prior knowledge of students for the new content or skill that is targeted for learning. As a result of the information gathered during the pre-assessment, the teacher can design three meaningful activities at the level the three groups needed. Curriculum Compacting provides for the student who is very capable and knowledgeable in a particular topic in a subject area. It is a way of maximizing time for the more advanced learner. It is used to provide enrichment for advanced learners beyond regular
