Hunter 1  Christopher Hunter Mr. Sieker Engl. 1519-1110 14 February 2019 The Light at Journey’s End: The Significance of the African Expedition in  Heart of Darkness Going on a journey is an undertaking in pursuit of more than just reaching the  destination. The promise of gaining new or greater insight into something, whether it be yourself, another person, or an object, continues to entice people into venturing into the unknown.  Journeys function similarly in literature, where characters embark on them to discover obscure  facets of themselves. In Joseph Conrad’s  Heart of Darkness , the expedition into Africa is more  meaningful than it appears on the surface. It is a search for self-knowledge under the guise of a  physical journey. Charlie Marlow, the protagonist, sets his sights on Africa to satiate his own boyish  curiosity towards the mysterious continent. Upon being appointed as a steamboat captain for the  Company, he is tasked with finding Mr. Kurtz, the Company’s most valuable asset. Initially,
