There are differences in the extent of an individual’s sympathy towards those who are suffering. Bravery can take many different forms; whether the courage form is facing a fear, accepting the problems that surround an individual, or enduring a physical or mental pain. Many different cultures view courage as a necessary virtue; however, there are some individuals from different cultures that show a lack of courage. Courage is a foundation for maintaining and practicing different virtues. In The Thousand and One Nights, there is an evident lack of courage in the male characters; however, Shahrazad is a selfless, well educated woman who exemplifies courage in her attitude and actions in order to save the people, especially the women suffering directly because of King Shahrayar; she utilizes her courageous demeanor because she values the Arabian culture and is sympathetic, helping save the people. After King Shahrayar and his brother find out about their wives cheating, they both become immature and have a narrow mindset about the faulting of their situation, resulting in their lack of compassion towards all women. The kings’ hearts become hard and full of hatred towards women, especially King Shahrayar. The brothers decide to take a trip to regather their thoughts about their lives and what is to come when they return. On their trip, they encounter the demon’s mistress who blackmails them into sleeping with her. They come to realize that the

Jimenez 2 demon’s mistress is cheating on the demon and they become joyful saying “O God, O God! Theres is no power and no strength, save in God the Almighty, the Magnificent. Great is women’s cunning” (Haddawy 1181). The kings pity the demon rather than the mistress who is being held captive. This encounter shows the mindset the kings have towards women, and how women in the Arabian culture are belittled and looked down upon. King Shahrayar believes that “‘there is not a single chaste woman anywhere on the entire face of the earth’” (1182). He makes
