Chapter 1 INTRODUCTION Background of the Study Learning environment refers to the diverse physical locations, contexts, and cultures in which students learn. Since students may learn in a wide variety of settings, such as outside-of-school locations and outdoor environment. A learning environment is the educational setting and how it looks and feels and can be positive or negative. Learning is self-initiated, but it must be aided by motives so that the learner will persist in the learning activity. A definite motive is valuable in all work, as motives make for studying. Motivation of learning activities helps the students to concentrate on what he is doing, and thereby to gain satisfaction. Continuous motivation is needed to help learners concentrate on the lessons to be learned. From experiments with a couple of high school students, Turney came to the conclusion “that the two major factors in school achievement are intelli gence and motivation, and that the latter is most important.” Book likewise asserts that “motivation is the control factor in every learning process.” In the same manner McMurry once said. “I believe that motivation is the most important

principle in education.” Thorndike makes the same point in explain ing that “thought and action occur largely in the service of wants, interest, and attitudes and are stimulated and guided by them.” Motivation is an internal impulse that brings us to complete an action. Without motivation, there is no action.Motivation is important because it is what causes us to actively look for resources to guarantee our success. A considerable amount of research states that seventy percent of students achievement on campus is determined the ability of the students themselves, the rest by the environment (Sudjana, 2011).
