Chapter 28 Identities Scientific Management Scientific Management was the practice of consulting efficiency experts to optimize work operations. The ideology was popularized by Frederick W. Taylor in 1911 with his book The Principles of Scientific Management. Muckrakers Muckrakers were reform-minded reporters who were concentrated on exposing the corrupt underbelly of the corporate and governmental spheres in the US. Muckrakers would publish many devastating articles and writings on Congress, the Standard Oil Company, and societal sins, such as child labor or segregation. The term, “Muckraker” was coined by President Roosevelt. Australian Secret Ballot The Secret Ballot was a system in which voter privacy was secured; its name derived from its invention in Australia during the 1850s. This system of voting was introduced in the US during the Progressive Era to counter boss rule, where a politician would manipulate the votes of immigrants in their favor. Direct Primaries A direct primary is a primary election in which voters directly select the candidates who run for office. Direct primaries were gradually integrated into the American voting system from 1901 to 1905.
