Why? Should New South Wales enact the Crimes Amendment (Zoe’s Law) Bill 2013 (No 2)? Introduction Few legislation processes have elicited controversy in the same measure as the Crimes Amendment (Zoe’s Law) Bill 2013 (No 2). While the law has the support of various sections of the society, it also faces stiff opposition from some quarters, including nongovernmental organisations. Particularly sensitive about the amendment is the bearing it has on legal abortion in New South Wales. Indeed, like other matters that tend to touch on abortion rights, Zoe’s law has emerged just as divisive. The law’s promoters have presented the argument that the Bill is meant to protect the unborn children. The Bill’s supporters assert that the deaths of unborn children should be punishable if they have resulted from violence or trauma meted on the mother or due to acts of recklessness.
