Kentzel 1 Willow Kentzel Muhammad Manzur Alam English 101 Section 008 February 15, 2017 The Strive for Gender Equality The Women and Girls foundation is a 501c3 non-profit organization, based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The mission of this outstanding foundation is to reach complete equality for both women and girls, now and for years to come. Their vision is to have all females statewide have equal access, opportunity, and influence in all aspects of their public and private lives. In order to do so, the Women and Girls foundation is actively focused on developing the female leaders of tomorrow and excelling women's rights today. Since the organization was founded in 2002, it has been successful in an endless amount of ways. After two years of getting the support and donations needed, they began doing what the founders desired. Just in 2004, they assisted women become elected to the PA State House, ban the shackling of female prisoners during child labor and birth, helped emergency contraception become available over the counter, and took the steps towards helping women of all economic levels protect their rights to affordable housing. They achieved so many things in just a matter of one year, so the growth and support took off. Now it is fifteen years later and the statewide program is known nationwide and out of all the organizations concerning gender equality that I could have chosen to focus on I found myself intrigued by the purpose and reasoning of the Women and Girls foundation based in Pittsburgh. Prior to simple research and the interview I knew little to nothing about this specific foundation,

Kentzel 2 even though I used to reside in Pittsburgh. Heather Arnet, the chief executive officer, pulled my interest towards the power of just organization after giving me twenty minutes of her own time discussing what and why the Women and Girls club is here today.
