Key Demographic Changes in Italy: Average marriage age has increased, the percentage of unmarried couples living together has increased, divorce rates increased leading to more 1 parent families (due to change in law basing divorce on mutual consensus no longer requiring a specific cause) Italy’s divorce rates are still relatively low compared to Europe, birth rates of declined a lot, increase in illegitimate births…sociologists think these changes could largely be attributed to the “liberation” of women in society in past 50 years Marriage used to be considered a right of passage from adolescence to adulthood Older people (grandparents) typically live with their sons/daughters etc or live alone and have very strong connections with the family and are considered the ones who “give” to the grandchildren the connection between grandparent and grandchild is very important for psychological development
