1 Tarbutton Dylan Tarbutton Multicultural Psychology 29 March 2018 Boxtrolls and Racism In the animated movie Boxtrolls , the theme of racism is prevalent, and so are similar topics such as oppression, discrimination, and stereotype. The synopsis of the movie is that there is a city that is ruled by a small group of men with white hats which represent prestige. A man named Snatcher wants to have a white hat so he can rule the city and eat cheese with the other men. To get privilege, he needs to get rid of creatures called boxtrolls, that are painted as malicious, throughout the whole town. Through the eyes of the townspeople, boxtrolls were seen as vicious stealers and attackers. Stories went through the town about them killing people, stealing babies, and breaking down houses. These legends have been passed down for plenty of years. The reason for all of this is because of stereotype. Stereotype is a generalization about a group or its members based on its categorizations. In this case, it is used negatively. The demonizing started because the boxtrolls looked after a child (that was said to be stolen) that was given to them. A stereotype ran through
