COEFFICIENT OF FRICTION AND ANGLE OF REPOSE The objective of the experiment is to measure the coefficient of friction between two surfaces by using a ramp and measure the angle of inclination. The coefficient of friction between two surfaces in contact is defined as the ratio of the force of limiting friction and the normal friction that corresponds to the base. It is mathematically expressed as follows: u = F/R The resultant angle is termed as the angle of repose, which is formed as a result of the limiting friction F and normal reaction R that makes an angle of repose R. The coefficient of friction is usually defined according to two different perspectives. This includes the static coefficient of friction (µ s ). Static friction is the friction that exists between two objects when neither of them is moving. Another type of coefficient includes the kinetic coefficient of friction (µ k ).
