Balanced Diet Study Questions What is a nutrient? There are several chemicals that are body requires which we call essential nutrients. The body requires an essential nutrient to operate normally, and it cannot synthesize an essential nutrient. Nutrient Requirements What is nutrient deficiency? Nutrient deficiency is the intake of a particular nutrient that is insufficient to ensure physiological functioning. What do we mean by nutrient adequacy? Nutrient adequacy is the intake of a particular nutrient that ensures the highest level of physiological functioning. What is nutrient toxicity? Nutrient toxicity is when the intake of a particular nutrient is beyond what is needed to meet physiological needs, and high enough to actually impair physiological functioning. How are these three concepts related? These three concepts are all related since too little of a nutrient creates a deficiency, just enough of the nutrient denotes adequacy, and too much causes toxicity. How is nutrient toxicity most likely to occur? Toxicity is much more likely to occur if you use supplements or highly fortified foods, like some breakfast cereals or sports bars. Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA) What organization sets the RDAs? The Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences
