PROFESSIONAL NURSING PRACTICE
Professional Nursing Practice
The nursing theory that changed my nursing career is Florence Nightingale's Environmental
Practice (Cherry & Jacob, 2017). I have worked in pediatrics for eight years. Environmental
Theory has shaped my role as a nurse and I apply it daily. One specific thing I feel strongly about
regard to this theory is noise and the affects the healing environment. As a pediatric nurse, I
provide my patients with a quiet healing environment by clustering my activities.
Nursing theory
The nursing theory that has influenced my career is Nightingale's Environmental Theory.
Nightingale defined nursing as "an art requiring an organized, practical, and scientific training"
(
Cherry & Jacob, 2017, p.81). Nightingale’s Environmental theory reflects on the nurse placing
the patient “in the best conditions for nature to preserve health-prevent, restore, or cure disease
or injury”
(
Cherry & Jacob 2017, p.81). The nurse is helping the patient to live. Nightingale's
Environmental Theory is a foundation to promote health and guidelines for professional nursing.
The following guideline are: ventilation, warming, noise, variety, diet, light, chattering hopes and
advice, and cleanliness
(
Cherry & Jacob, 2017). Florence Nightingale's Theory influences my
daily practice as a night shift nurse in managing the noise around the patient. As a night shift
nurse, I try to cluster my care for my patients and am as quiet as possible. In addition to my
specific practices, our hospital has developed a sleepy-menu which contains products that helps
our patients sleep. We can also close the door and place a sign that the patient is napping. This
helps to decrease the amount of traffic going in and out of the room.
Excellent nursing practices
Professional nurses are using Nightingale's Theory every day. Ventilation and warming are used
every day by the licensed nurse. Our job is to educate the patient on taking deep breaths. Correct

breathing techniques can prevent pneumonia. The nurse must also assess the patient’s nutritional
needs; nutrition is vital in helping the body heal and fight infection.
Professional Practice Nursing Theory
I use Nightingale's cleanliness practice in my daily routine as a licensed nurse. Before I enter my
patient's room, I wash my hands. Next, I assess my patient’s skin. This allows me to check for
any skin breakdown. Keeping skin clean, dry and turning my patients helps reduce skin
breakdown. I communicate with my nurse assistance and make an individual plan for each
patient. The mobility of the patient determines how often we turn them. However, two hours is
standard protocol.
