Reading is very important for our students. It is the key tool they need to be successful. If the student can’t read they will struggle in every subject in class. As a teacher we hold the responsibility to create a way for our students to be successful. The Seven Pillars of Effective Instruction give us an idea of where we need to focus on. It gives us information of how we should educate and engage our students. Seven Pillars of Effective Instruction Teacher Knowledge Teacher knowledge is important in being a successful reading teacher. As a teacher I must know the content in which I am going to be teaching. I must have research based knowledge and effective instructional practices. This year I moved from 4th grade to 5th grade reading. I needed to research and become familiar with the reading skills that I needed for 5th grade. I continue to attend professional developments that help me understand the standards better. I also collaborate with the other 5th grade reading teachers to help me prepare.
