Lecture/ RESOURCE 1a Mental illness is as a culturally constructed meaning system. Mental Illnesses have meaning in four ways: (Meanings of Madness by R. Castillo1998, p. xiii) 1. through the symptoms (indicator of an illness) 2. through the cultural significance 3. through personal social relationships 4. through the explanatory model - Terminology proposed by Horwitz: (p14/15, Creating Mental Illness ) Mental diseases are conditions where symptoms indicate underlying internal dysfunctions, are distinct from other disease conditions, and have certain universal features. (internal dysfunction means normal things are not working correctly like cognition etc.). this one is most representative of a medical model according to the Horwitz. Mental disorders include all mental diseases as well as psychological dysfunctions whose overt symptoms are shaped by cultural as well as natural processes. Horwitz says we gotta separate mental disorders.
