Chapters 1 and 2 Know that microbial cells can range from a few nanometers to a fraction of a millimeter in size . To be able to see them we need microscopes Microscopes increase RESOLUTION (know the definition for it) by increasing (MAGNIFICATION) . Resolution is the smallest distance by which two objects can be separated and still be distinguished Magnification is an increase in the apparent size of an image to resolve smaller separations between objects Light versus electron microscopy (use light versus electron beams) Light microscopy uses light to resolve images of individual cells Electron microscopy uses electrons to resolve images. Know all 4 examples of light microscopy (bright field, dark field, fluorescence, phase contrast). Know the examples of electron microscopy (SEM, TEM).

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
