Running head: QUESTION SET #3 2 The Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) held hearings about the human rights violations that occurred during apartheid. It hoped to integrate the wrongdoers back into society through confession and forgiveness by the value of ubuntu , as well as “cleansing the wounds” (Tutu, 1999, pg. 61) of the victims by providing reparations. Through these reparations, South Africa slowly progressed toward a more stable future after the adversity of apartheid. The first part of this paper will discuss the process of the reparations in South Africa, the second part will talk about the strengths of the TRC, and the final part will look at its weaknesses. During the process of reparations, victims had to first apply for relief. Then they received what became known as ‘urgent interim relief,’ which gave them U.S. $330 until the country could pay them U.S. $3,830 annually for six years, known as ‘individual reparation grants.’ Non- monetary reparations also proved important to families. These included any amends that they would consider most valuable to that specific group; some received surgeries and others simply required money.
