ECE 3614: Introduction to Communication Systems – Spring 2017 MATLAB Project: Analog Modulation Due: April 26, 2017, Wednesday, 11:00am 1. Objective The goal of this MATLAB-based project is to help you visualize how analog modulation works. The project focusses on sinusoidal modulation and its analysis. All the MATLAB code required for this project is provided. You just need to follow the following steps to run the code: (a) Download the zip folder MatlabProject.zip containing the MATLAB functions: DSB_LC.m, DSB_SC.m, SSB_SC.m, FM.m, GenerateSinusoid.m, PlotSignal.m and PlotSpectrum.m . (b) Save the functions in the directory in which you run MATLAB. (c) Start MATLAB. 2. Specifics The details of the MATLAB functions provided are as follows: (a) DSB_LC(Am, Fm, MessageSignalType, Ac, Fc, CarrierSignalType, ka, time) This function generates sinusoidal message and carrier signals and modulates the message signal using DSB-LC. It returns the modulated signal as output as well as the time plots and spectrum plots of the message signal, carrier signal and modulated signal. Am is the amplitude of the message signal, Fm is the frequency of the message signal, MessageSignalType is a string that specifies the type of the message signal (it can be either ‘Sine’ or ‘Cosine’ ), Ac is the amplitude of the carrier signal, Fc is the frequency of the carrier signal, CarrierSignalType is a string that specifies the type of the carrier signal (it can be either ‘Sine’ or ‘Cosine’ ), ka is the modulation index and time is the total time in seconds for which the message signal is to be generated. (b) DSB_SC(Am, Fm, MessageSignalType, Ac, Fc, CarrierSignalType, time) This function generates sinusoidal message and carrier signals and modulates the message signal using DSB-SC. It returns the modulated signal as output as well as the time plots and spectrum plots of the message signal, carrier signal and modulated signal.
