Letter of Advice DraftLetter of Advice DraftChrisoula RuckerCOM200: Interpersonal CommunicationInstructor Nathan SandOctober 18, 2018
Letter of Advice Draft2Greetings Rick,First off, let me start by saying congratulations on your recent engagement!Yesterday, when I received your email reaching out for advice you and Roberta can use toimprove your communication skills, I was pleasantly surprised. Since I have started myInterpersonal Communication (COM200) class at Ashford University, I have developed adesire to be the most effective communicator possible and I am proud it has not goneunnoticed. But, I will suggest that in the event you and Roberta find you need more helpto communicate better you follow the advice of Teddi Johnson (2011). Johnson offersseveral methods to obtain communication advice such as attending marriage preparationcourses, marital enhancement programs, or even couples’ counseling. To communicateeffectively, we must understand that there are several principles of and barriers tocommunication. We should also understand that several things can affect communication;among these are culture, gender, and the amount of self-disclosure being shown. Sincecommunication is such a big part of our lives, it is important to realize that it plays a vitalrole in developing and maintaining one’s self-concept, self-image, and self-esteem.Lastly, conflicts are bound to arise in all of our relationships. Having the ability toeffectively resolve them is critical to maintaining relationships and further developingcommunication skills. While this may seem like a lot of information to consider, eachtopic can be easily broken down and explained. In order for one to communicateeffectively/competently, they must ensure that they are knowledgeable about theseaspects that make up communication. So, let’s get started.Principles of Communication
Letter of Advice Draft3According to the textbook assigned for COM200 (Bevan & Sole, 2014), there aresix principles of communication: taking responsibility for your communication conduct, achieving shared meaning, knowing that your view is just one of many, respecting othersand yourself, listening to understand instead of to respond, and being a competentcommunicator. These principles are important because understanding and following themenables us to communicate more effectively/competently. To keep this email at areasonable length, though, I will only focus on two of these principles. However, if youwould like any information on the others, please do not hesitate to ask. In our class, weare learning that to enjoy effective/competent communication, each party should listenwith the intent to understand what the other person is saying and not just to respond.
