ISSN: 2165-6258 :: 07(02):201–210 (2017) DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY FOR THE TOURISM INDUSTRY OF HO CHI MINH CITY Tran Duc Anh Investment Department, Ministry of Finance, Vietnam Nguyen Duc Bao Long and Nguyen Thi Le Van Dong Do University, Vietnam This study was conducted to theoretically develop and empirically study a structural model of factors that might have impact on the development of Ho Chi Minh City’s tourism thus in the hope to improve its current weaknesses on all the variables tested in this study from the tourists’ perspective. The proposed hypotheses that attempted to identify the structural relationship among the 5 construct model to examine through the series of analysis based on the various variables such as perceived tourism perception of Ho Chi Minh City’s transportation, amenities, attractions and human resources. The principal guideline of this study is to provide supports for Ho Chi Minh’s tourism service providers and decision makers in the process for tourism planning and long-term sustainability of tourism destinations. These people should have solid knowledge and direct participation in the tourism planning and development and having long term observation and interactions with their important role in managing tourism industry and bring forward Ho Chi Minh City as one of the preferred tourist destination in the world. The study had collected 249 usable survey questionnaires from the simple random sampling throughout 20 medium and big hotels in Ho Chi Minh City. From the research findings and tests, attraction emerges as the most influencing factor which has an implication that Ho Chi Minh City should invest in establish new or improve existing tourism attractions for the City. Additional findings that would benefit the tourism development in particular to the economic growth to the nations thus it is very important that Ho Chi Minh City should support enhancement of tourism strategies for destination competitiveness. Keywords: Tourism industry, Development strategy, Amenities, Attractions, Human resources. Introduction Tourism is becoming a basic needs of people around the world as well as in Vietnam. Over the past years, the tourism industry has been developing at a dramatically speed with annual average growth forecast of 8.9%. It is estimated that, by 2020, there will be 12 million international tourists to Vietnam making tourism one of the leading economic industries (Vietnam General Department of Tourism, 2015). Known for long as the “Eastern Pearl”, Ho Chi Minh City is a must-visit destination for all domestic as well as international tourists to Vietnam.
