RESPONSE 1 This scenario is an example of conflict in the workplace as well as a dilemma. Nonetheless, in this situation, I don’t think the unit clerk was in the correct power to withhold the patient’s medical record from the nurse, who is, in fact, superior to her. She used informal power against a person with formal power. Formal power is power that comes from an official position a person holds within an organization, while informal power comes from a person’s internal qualities (CITE). In this case, the unit clerk’s informal power was that she was able to withhold the records from the nurse. She misused her informal power. Do you believe the charge nurse or the team leader should have stepped in? Do you think the unit clerk misuse her informal power? There is a clear authority-power gap between doctors and nurses.
