Lewis and Clark ExpeditionWhat is the Lewis and Clark Expedition? The Lewis and Clark Expedition is a voyage that was ordered by Thomas Jefferson for the exploration of the northwestern territories of the United States. The Expedition was led Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. Their Objective was to travel and discover what resided in the land that they had bought through the Louisiana Purchase.The Lewis and Clark Expedition had definitely changed history and is a great historical event that led to many different outcomes of the United States.Meriwether Lewis was in charge of the Lewis and Clark expedition.Lewis was born in Virginia during 1774 and moved to Georgia, where he spent most of his childhood.In his teenager years, he moved back to Virginia to continue his education in college.When he finished college in 1793, he decided to join the Virginia Militia in which he ended up putting an end to the Whiskey Rebellion (History.com). Soon after, He became a Captain for the United States Army.After serving in the Army for a few years, and at age twenty-seven he became a personal secretary for President Thomas Jefferson. Lewis’ Partner in this Expedition was William Clark.William Clark was chosen by Meriwether Lewis and Thomas Jefferson to go on the Expedition through the newly gained lands of the Louisiana Purchase.Clark was bornin Virginia, Like Lewis, during 1770 and Moved to Kentucky at the age of fifteen.At the PAGE 1
age of nineteen,he joined the State Militia for Kentucky and that led to him joining the United States Army where he served under the command of Meriwether Lewis (History.com).After a few years in the Army, Clark was Commissioned under President George Washington as a Lieutenant of infantry.In 1796, He returned to his family’s home to take charge of the estate in place of his father.Around seven years later, Lewis showed up and asked him to take part in an adventure that would change the history of America forever.Lewis and Clark both had to Prepare for their Expedition that would take them around two years to complete.They decided to pack necessities such as a sextant, compass, medicine/medicinal herbs,maps, extra clothes, fishing supplies, flint and steel, telescope, chronometer, weapons, mosquito nets,salt, soap, corn mill, utensils, books, and journals (History.com).They brought gifts for the Native Americans that resided in these lands, as well,such as beads, brightly-colored cloth, ribbon, sewing supplies, mirrors, face paint, tobacco, ivory combs, and knives.Lewis and Clark were very prepared for this voyage, and they also brought thirty-three men with them as well.Basically,Thomas Jefferson bought the Louisiana territory and he wanted the other countries to stay away from it, so he wanted to claim the land as soon as possible.
