My body My rightIn 1973, the United States Supreme Court passed a law that protected the constitutional right for women`s privacy toward medical decisions concerning their body. The law protected the decision to have legal abortions without political interference. The action on defunding Planned Parenthood becomes a political interference, and when there is interference on women`s medical decision the government is violating their rights. If this decision goes through, many women will lose the services provided for them-safe regulated abortions, free birth-control, counseling, and breast exams. The decision targets low-income and women of color who depend on this facilities to provide them with services they need. As a woman, I would like to decide on my own medical decisions that are beneficial to my body. I, like many women depend on Planned Parenthood because it is free and safe. If the government decides to close and defund these facilities, many women would lose the opportunity to make the right decision, and their rights would be taken away from them. During mid-19thcentury, abortions were illegal causing many women to look for unregulated and unsafe areas to seek abortions. For example, in the case of Jane Roe, she looked to end her pregnancy; however, she lived in Texas- a state where abortions were illegal. Roe believe having an abortion fell into the right to privacy, and this right is found in the Fourteenth Amendment. She decided to take this to the courts and she won the case. This monument case helped women gained the right to choose abortion and what to do with their bodies (Roe vs Wade). Before Roe, women were either force to have children or seek other alternatives. Low-income women had to find backdoor abortions clinics in conditions that were unsanitary. This lead to abortion-related deaths because women had no choice but to do it illegally. “Illegal abortions make one-sixth of all pregnancies and childbirth related death” (Planned Parenthood).
