In the field of Medical Lab Science, certification is often a requirement for the job to ensure that applicants are qualified individuals. Several organizations, such as the American Medical Technologists (AMT), offer certification exams for individuals in the medical lab science field. AMT labels itself as “the choice for allied health professional certification”, and guarantees a quality credential for those wishing to become certified. To earn the certification from AMT, one must first determine their eligibility. For medical technologists (MT), the individual must meet one of four eligibility routes: 1) Graduate from an accredited medical technology program with a bachelor’s degree in medical technology; 2) Graduate from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree and complete an accredited medical laboratory technician program (MLT) OR a 50-week US MLT training program and complete at least one year of approved lab experience within the last five years; 3) Graduate from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree and complete at least 35 semester hours of coursework related to clinical laboratory sciences and either complete an accredited academic program in medical technology
