What was the Cuban Missile Crisis? The Cuban Missile Crisis was a direct cold war confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union. A moment in time where two superpowers came closest to nuclear conflict . The Cuban Missile Crisis occured in 1962,when the Soviet Union begin to install nuclear missiles in Cuba. The United States refused to allow this and after thirteen days and many secret communications,the Soviet Union agreed to remove the missiles. Origins of the Cuban Missile Crisis Prior to the crisis, the United States seeked to overthrow Fidel Castro and the government of Cuba. This failed attempt was known as Bay of Pigs invasion. During this invasion, the United States supported Cuban exiles hoping to create an uprising against Castro. The United States had also installed missiles sites in Turkey with the range to strike the capital of the Soviet Union
