Reading Journal #3 “Slang is language which takes off its coat, spits on its hands – and goes to work.” -- Carl Sandburg, poet   Slang refers to words, phrases and uses that are regarded as very informal and often restricted to special context. Slang can offend people if it is used about other people or outside a group of people who know each other well. Slang is usually used in speaking rather than writing. I think Sandburg means that slang has the potential to be impolite and can make the word rough, direct and clear. Slang usually fails to work when the participants are from different cultures. That is while it is found in nearly every culture and co-culture, slang typically does not cross cultures. I also think that most slang does not last long. It looks foolish when it gets old and it is used by the wrong people as well. Slang expressions work in the same way; as society changes and develops, new slang expressions are born and old slang expressions are dropped. I think formal writing is very important.
