oHi Professor,I thoroughly enjoyed this article. It succinctly describes Islam and Muslim understanding throughout the world, especially in the West. I appreciate the authors notation on the spectrum of attitudes and respect toward women withing Islamic culture. I believe this is a source of contention for Americans when trying to understand Muslim culture. Too often, it is the extremes of treatment toward women that causes Americans to develop an unfavorable view of Islamic culture. The irony is that this is a political and cultural difference that divides the West from certain Islamic cultures (but Muslims as a whole); and Muslims have the same difficulties in understanding Western and American culture and politics. Misunderstanding and immediate judgment causes us all to develop negative opinions and focus on extremes in each of our cultures, losing sight of the beauty of the religions and actual people that make up the majority of these labels.
