CONSULTATIVE CHANGE RECOMMENDATIONS2Consultative Change RecommendationsChange is to alter, transform, replace, or shift thoughts, actions, outcomes, strategies, or plans. Change is inevitable and necessary. As our population continues to grow and age the importance of change in healthcare is substantial. Purpose of Consultation and Overview of the Consultation ProcessThe purpose of the professional consultation with the nurse leader was to gain insight into everyday operations at that level — understanding of what happens on a day to day basis and what a masters prepared nurse brings to the organization. The interview took place in the manager's office which was tucked away down a busy hallway next to the mental health holding unit and surgical services locker room. Sitting at a small table with three chairs. She greeted interviewer with a small card that said: "you are someone's reason for change." We began by reviewing the mission of the hospital; to inspire hope, improve health, and heal communities. The manager states that “the mission, vision, and values are available on the website, given during general orientation for new hires, and I try and tie everything back to our mission. If I send someone a card or email it relates to our mission.” One strength within the organization is that they are nurse friendly, the importance of raising nurse leaders is apparent in each and every meeting that leadership attends. A weakness of the organization is that we are growing rapidly and we are not focusing on experienced nurses, the focus is on recruiting new nurses. Some of the major opportunities for improvement is nurse retention, utilizing an improved staffing model, patient centered education and community education. The hospital has placed barcode medication scanning for every unit, bedside reports, hourly rounding, increased educational opportunities, as well as increased involvement for quality improvement projects.
