Artist Report: Philip Guston
Artist Biography:
Philip Guston was born in 1913 on June 27 th in Montreal, Canada. He was the youngest
of 7 children. Guston’s father and mother moved their family to America to seek shelter from
persecution but quickly realized that life was difficult in their new country. Guston’s father
struggled to find work and eventually became deeply depressed and committed suicide by
hanging himself. Sadly, Guston found his father’s body; this experience ended up having a
profound influence in his life. Guston then got interested in comics and in drawing; this lead his
mother to enroll him at the Cleveland School of Cartooning, which began his career as an artist.
