UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA DEPARTMENT OF CHEMICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING CHEE 303 CHEMICAL ENGINEERING MASS TRANSFER FALL 2018 Test 3 November 13 A distillation column with a total condenser and a reboiler will be used to separate a mixture of methanol (light component) and trichloroethylene (TCE). The feed will be a saturated liquid with a flow rate of 500 kmol/h of a mixture containing 60 mol% of methanol. The goal of the process is to obtain a bottoms product that that contains 90% TCE and a distillate that contains 90% methanol. A reflux ratio equal to 3 times the minimum reflux will be used. Relevant physical properties are: kJ/mol35Hvapcp5.0L(viscosity of the feed) 1. Determine the number of theoretical stages required to perform the desired separation. 2. Estimate the number of actual trays that the column will require and the actual feed location.
