Shanta Forrest Introduction to Business Law Lawsuits were filed in New Jersey in January 2013, alleging that Bayer Pharmaceuticals were negligent at informing its consumers of the dangers of using its intrauterine device (IUD), Mirena . Mirena is a long-term, reversible method of birth control. It works through the continuous emission of hormones that thickens the mucous walls of the uterus thereby decreasing the survival rate of any sperm attempting to enter the uterus. Several women who have used the device, have suffered serious complication upon removal of the device. These complications range from life-threatening ectopic pregnancy-a pregnancy that happens outside the uterus-perforation of the uterine wall to serious pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). Their consumers that have filed lawsuits are alleging that the devices were defected, and they are seeking compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering.
