PERFORMANCE APPRAISALS 2 Performance Appraisals In the workforce, evaluations are known as performance appraisals. These appraisals must be carefully created with the most important competencies to assess an employee’s work ethics and performance of essential job tasks. Performance appraisals are important for many reasons revolving around the current employees, potential employees, and business functions. The appraisal assessment can be performed and completed at any time. Performance appraisals are a function of management that must be completed effectively and carefully in order to help employees achieve organizational goals without discriminating the employee. Function of Management Performance appraisals are performed by management at the request of the human resources department. According to Youssef-Morgan (2015), performance appraisals are defined as “the process through which employee performance is assessed, feedback is provided to the employee, and corrective action plans are designed” (Section 6.2). This process requires a manager to perform the evaluation, so the correct feedback is provided, and a plan is set in place for the employee to help achieve organizational goals. Tracking the results of each evaluation period for the employee gives the manager and human resource department the necessary information to efficiently decide if the employee should be given a raise, promotion, demotion, or another action taken against them (Youssef-Morgan, 2015). Performance appraisals are important for employees to succeed in their career advancement goals and the organization to understand how the goals and objectives are being met efficiently.
