Smith 1 Devin Smith English 102 2-20-2018 Mrs. Vedulat The Storm The novel “ The Storm ” written by Kate Chopin “ is based in the late nineteenth century at Friedheimer ’ s local store in Louisiana and at the nearby house of Calixta and Bonbinot ” (Ostman, 2004). The duration of the story relies heavily on the setting, and puts a major impact on the events that occur. The author puts a primary emphasis on the setting to tell the anecdote of the affair. “ The Storm ” demonstrates how the author uses the environment the characters are in to form an affair between Calixta and Alcee using the storm as the start of the flame. Once the storm began , that was the start of the affair . Once the storm ended, the affair ended as well. Throughout the story, the reader can see that the author was using the storm as a way to keep the story flowing. At the very beginning of the story , Chopin says that Bobinot and Bibi were at the grocery store and started to notice that there were clouds approaching their location. Chopin stated, “ It began to grow dark, and suddenly realizing the situation she got up hurriedly and went about closing the windows and doors. ” (II) The dark clouds symbolize that there is going to be a new character introduced in the story.
