Professor Kadir CMLIT 005 18 April 2006 “Our America” by Jose Marti and “Hands” by Sherwood Anderson contain similar issues and elements in their respective stories that help tie them together. In “Our America” Jose Marti calls for people with ideas to step forward and let them be known. He also thinks that people should not imitate others, and we should always be progressing further. Marti refers to Latin America in the story, and he thinks that the people should be united. “Hands” is a story about a man named Wing Biddlebaum whose hands play a large part in his life. He isolates himself from others because he is afraid that his hands will betray him once again, like they did in the past. These works contain issues such as community and communication, which play important roles in both stories. Marti talks about the theme of community in “Our America”. He expresses a desire for America to stand united, and for the citizens to act as a community. He wants Americans to stand strong, and to exemplify a willingness to do so.
