RI 3: C. Global Issues addressed 20.1 If we affirm that internationalism is an extension of our democratic nationalism and its civic principles then how do we promote internationalism and encourage discussion, debate, disagreement and consensus? Usually, we look to long established nation-states that promote a liberal democracy as case studies in how to assist newly formed nations of today. Through the same type of forums, events and institutions that shape democracy in our countries are used as models to assist internationalism in the world community. For example, we have the rule of law and the free elections of the people. So, that’s a principle. How it looks in another people’s world requires discussion of the interpretation and actions. They may need support so we provide education. They made need resources so the world provides funding tied to the outcome. We listen and act. We agree, disagree and find to some extent how to achieve an outcome that promotes democracy of the people, by the people and for the people. That’s democracy and internationalism is its global presence. Supranational institutions assist in that they are available for consultation on health, security, democratic principles, law, sustainable development and human rights. Also, there are international NGO’s which have a long standing presence in world communities and are trusted for their private work. They can be accessed to assist. Outside of global government, national governments, UN or NGO’s there is another way to encourage internationalism….sports, culture and global social engagement. Increasing globalization has cast a worldwide spotlight on issues that might, at one time, have concerned only a limited number of people. In recent years, we come to realize that the world’s people are more connected than ever. This connectedness has fostered awareness that issues such as climate change, the spread of disease, and access to water affect everyone. In this next section, you will explore how international issues are created and also solved by internationalism. The following inquiry questions will be used to guide your exploration: • What are the impacts on global issues of pursuing internationalism? • How can the pursuit of internationalism help resolve global issues? UN Millennium Development Goals . Look to the UN Millennium Development Goals. What are they? the UN established eight international targets — its millennium development goals. These goals, which were to be achieved by 2015, included reducing poverty by 50 per cent, ensuring that all children have access to primary education, and combating diseases such as 1 Prepared by Maria Araujo-Nickel Archbishop MacDonald
