Plot structure o Exposition: As the play opens, several men are introduced in the town of Guellen. Included are Ill, the popular shopkeeper, the major, the schoolmaster, the priest, and several townsmen. They talk about the visit of the millionairess and how they hope that she is the only hope of Guellen thriving once again. When she arrives, we find she’s a little wacky and does not view her helpers and husband as people and merely things to help her go up in the world. She also has a caged black panther and an empty coffin. We find out that Ill and Claire were past lovers and you can see them flirting with each other. Everyone sees her as a little weird but since she is rich, they greet her with open arms. Claire and Ill revisit the old places they used to be when they were lovers and reminisce about the past. o Initial Incident We find out that the reason for Claire’s visit to Guellen was because she wants justice for what Ill did to her when they were still lovers. He brought false evidence and because of that, she moved and became a prostitute. She then tells the mayor that she will give the town of Guellen a million dollars for the death of Ill. The mayor and townspeople harshly refuse but she says “I’ll wait” o Rising action Ill is content that the town refused to kill him for Claire’s money After a while, he gets worried as the townspeople are starting to buy more expensive things and the trend of the “yellow shoes” The mayor and policeman both dismiss his claims of Claire’s threat Claire’s black panther escaped and was killed (foreshadowing) o Ill plans to leave town, and the townspeople are there to attempt to block his way to the train. He has a breakdown. Claire gets married again The mayor, schoolmaster, and priest beg Claire for a donation without the burden of killing Ill. She confesses she actually owns all the properties in Guellen which is why the town is in decline and in poverty. Claire divorced her new husband Schoolmaster confesses that Ill is going to die and he is going to participate and Ill accepts his crimes Mayor tells Ill to commit suicide to make it easier on everyone and he refuses. Ill and his family drive in their new car and with new outfits to the place him and Claire visited a lot when they were young lovers He meets Claire and they talk about their past again and what is going to happen when he dies. She confesses that she never stopped loving him but the love turned into something toxic There is a town meeting dealing with “Claire’s donation” with tons of press o Climax Unanimous vote to “accept Claire’s donation” Thank Ill for his “contribution” They usher the press out of the room for refreshments The townspeople gather and kill Ill o Falling action

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
