Lab A: Young’s Modulus—Elasticity in Length Professor: Haizheng Zhuang Physics 103A-005 Experiment Date : 9/11/2018 Due Date: 9/18/2018 Objective: The objective of this lab is to determine Young’s Modulus of elasticity of a thin wire by stretching. Introduction: The goal of this lab is to determine Young’s Modulus of a thin wire by adding weight and stretching it. The first part of the experiment involved adding mass to the hanger and stretching the wire. The second part, the seven masses were taken off and the change was measured using the micrometer. Young’s Modulus can be determined by graphing the results. The following equations were used to calculate necessary values 1. Stress = F/A 2. Strain = Δ L/L 3. Y = Stress/Strain = (F/A)/( Δ L/L) 4. A= [ (d 2 )]/4 Eperimental Procedure: Follow procedure listed in Physics 103A Lab Manual, 8th Edition, on pages 12-13 Results: L = 690 mm; L 0 = 16.78 mm; D = 6.2*10 -4 m; A = 3.019*10 -7 m 2 Table I Weight m (kg) Applied Force F=mg (N) Reading of the Micrometer Screw L 1 (mm) Δ L=L 1 -L 0 (mm) Strain Δ L/L Stress
