READING MEMOReading Memo #2 Sana Abbaali University of Southern California Word Count: 802
READING MEMOIn the readings Dude, You’re A Fag: Masculinity and Sexuality in High Schoolby C.J. Pascoe and Barbie Girls versus Sea Monsters: Children Constructing Gender by Michael A. Messner, a lot is mentioned about the behavior of young boys and girls. Pascoe describes compulsive heterosexuality as a “constellation of sexualized practices, discourses, and interactions (Pascoe 86). He builds it off Adrienne Rich’s already power concept of “compulsory heterosexuality.” Pascoe then explains how Rich illustrates the idea of how heterosexuality outlines “sexual desires, practices and orientations but is a ‘political institution’” (Pascoe 86). Messner starts off by explaining the concept of “gender play” and how it is used “to analyze the social processes through which children construct gender” (Messner 766). Messner then goes on to further explain that the research focused on “not the individual but “group life -- with social relations, the organization and meanings of social situations, the collective practices through which children and adults create and recreate gender in their daily interactions”” (Messner 766).
