Franchise colonialism: the political and social domination of culturally unrelated group in a different territory; most well-known type of colonialism - Begins in the second half of the 20 th century due to new navigation technology which led to new commercial networks throughout the globe. This created a new world system (new localities brought together in a single world market). A world market is when prices in one part of the world affect prices in another part of the world. - First Phase : Primarily about commercial capital interests. - Second phase : industrial revolution phase. Driven by the need to extract natural resources that are only available in certain places, and you secure cheap labor by coercing native populations to do the work for you lol. Majority of colonial/imperial expansion; the height of colonial expansion was around mid 19 th century. Colonizer : mainly urban and European living in a center Colonized : primarily in the 3 rd world, but at the periphery; non-European and not at the centers
