Biol 101 22 January 2008 The endomembrane system (lots of parts working together) 4.14 membrane is like a moving sidewalk – molecule, receptor, etc. might be on the membrane and move out to the ER o On the ER, a molecule is on the Rough ER; transport vesicle o Golgi bodies Transport vesicle will fuse with golgi body; the membrane will become another transport vesicle; goes to cell membrane, vesicle will fuse and become part of plasma membrane OR lysosome (not likely to be part of cell membrane) o Free ribosomes make proteins for within the cell o Membrane-bound organelles will never be in a prokaryote o Vesicles Membranous sacs Lysosomes are examples of a vesicle o Central vacuole Fluid-filled Amino acids, sugars, wastes May expand to 50-90% of cell Good example: central vacuole in plants that stores materials used to make other molecules, etc., lets plant cells be strong and supported when it fills with water Mitochondria o
