Ahquasia Ramsay CHM3120C Pre-lab 4 Determine the Volumetric of Tainted Sodium Carbonate Introduction: The purpose of this lab is to titrate a solution of Na 2 CO 3 , also named soda ash , by using a standardized solution of HCL. By doing this, the amount of unrefined sodium carbonate that is titrated and the volume of standardized acid used, the total amount of carbonate in the sample can be known (CMMB, 2019). Phenolphthalein indicator will be used during this experiment. These are acid/base indicators to show the end-point of an acid/base reaction (Physical Sciences, 2012). Also, bromocresol green indicator will be used. It s a dye that has a pH indicator for titrations as well as growth mediums for microbes. It s also used as an analytical method (Revolvy.com) Materials: 200 mL of 6 M HCl solution 1 L of standardized HCl Approximately 12g of dried soda ash pH paper Bromocresol green indicator Phenolphthalein indicator Water Weigh bottles Desiccator Burette Weigh scale Erlenmeyer flask Safety: Water: Hazard Identification: none
Handling: wash hands with mild soap after lab experiment Personal protection: wear googles and safety gloves. Hydrochloric acid: Hazard Identification: harmful if swallowed. May cause eye and skin burns. Handling: use in ventilated areas. Don t ingest and avoid contact with skin, eyes and clothes. Personal protection: wear gloves, googles/ face shield, and lab coat. Sodium Carbonate: Hazard Identification: may cause eye, respiratory and skin irritation Handling: don t inhale, minimize dust circulation and use under hood Personal protection: wear gloves, appropriate clothing, and goggle Bromocresol Green: Hazard Identification: Not identified Handling: keep in cool, dried and ventilated areas. Don t freeze and keep away from moisture Personal protection: wear protective clothing, lab coat, gloves and googles.
