Tuesday, January 22, 2019 Journalism PHIL 1st lecture Jan 22 - Defining Ethics Choosing what is good, both for the individual and for society Ex: Greek thought — more people acting in ethical way is a good way - Individual based in the purpose of ethics - If the person makes the right choice over and over than it was a positive for society — Aristotle - Greeks formed democracy Choosing the better or best alternative The di ff erence between morals and ethics - Ethics is an acedemic discipline in how you choose between two or more alternatives - Morals generally have some kind of religious foundation (judeo/christian, eastern religion) - Distinction: abortion issue — legislation in what is right or wrong — EX: Catholic — church issue that is the moral — teaching of the church - In Ethics we can rationalize a bit (quiver) —(WE can debate on ethics) - It is hard to change and debate with morals (because religious conviction) Being able to explain your reasoning Two perfectly moral people may arrive at completely di
