It seems evident that in the modern era we live in, many people struggle with getting enough sleep each night. This lack of sleep can be very damaging to one’s life, especially if it is a very common event. This insufficient amount of sleep occurs due to many factors. Throughout time, people have struggled because of the amount of work they take home with them, but in today’s society a major reason for the loss of sleep in the increase in the amount of technology that surrounds us. It seems as though everyone has a television in their room, and if not that then the infamous smart phone. One can spend hours at a time simply scrolling through all the different social media applications that we have on our phones. I know I have fallen into the category of those who over looksleep, but the only way to see how much the lack of sleep affects your everyday life is to understand all the factors that go into sleep. With today’s society based around technology and multi-tasking many people overlook the importancethat sleep has on everyday life; that’s why it’s important to learn all the factors that go sleep. The only way to truly understand sleep’s importance is to first learn how the process works. Many people don’t understand that sleep is not passive, and that the human brain is very active even when our bodies aren’t. Sleep is a very complex process, and the complexity starts with the different neurotransmitters that function in our brains. Nerve-signaling chemicals called neurotransmitters control whether we are asleep or awake by acting on different groups of nerve cells, or neurons, in the brain. Neurons in the brainstem, which connects the brain with the spinal cord, produce neurotransmitters such as serotonin and norepinephrine that keep some parts of the brain active while we are awake. Other neurons at the base of the brain begin signaling when we fallasleep. These neurons appear to "switch off" the signals that keep us awake. (“Brain Basics”)During sleep we usually go through a five-phase cycle: stages 1,2,3,4, and REM or otherwise known as rapid eye movement. It’s a continuous cycle and once REM is complete, it repeats itself. Almost half of the time is spent in the second stage of sleep
