Popilsky 1 Tovah Popilsky SID: 3033831805 Shawn Shirazi Wednesday 3:00PM Discussion Section 14 November 2018 Homework #6: An Essay Discussing the Prevalence of Adderall ® on College Campuses and Their Effects “It’s my morning cup of coffee, except no one told me the insidious side effects.” -Statement from an 18 year old Female (NY Times) All throughout history, people have found ways to use plants and various chemicals to effects their mind state and possibly experience stimulating, psychedelic, or relaxing effects. Alongside caffeine and cocaine, other stimulating drugs and plants started to be used and produced in order to foster alertness and focus in users. Since the 1990s, stimulants such as Adderall ® have been introduced as prescription drugs to treat and control attention deficit issues such as ADD and ADHD. Amphetamine-based prescription drugs such as Adderall ® and Ritalin ® have become prevalent in society and have had a large appeal to people without a valid prescription. This is because of the short term effects that these stimulant drugs have on the human brain. As a result of these drugs’ redemptive properties, stimulants with the ability of keeping users alert and aware throughout the day, began to develop a reputation as “study drugs” and have shown prevalence on high school and college campuses where they are used enhance cognitive ability. This paper will discuss the history of Adderall ® , the short and long term effects of using Adderall ® and the prevalence of non-prescription Adderall ® among modern college students.

Popilsky 2 Since the 1930s, amphetamines were used nonmedically to help “improve” the well- being of users.. They were used as “go drugs” in the military, and used to control appetite and to stimulate weight loss. With the increasing stigma surrounding amphetamines as a result of their close relationship to the “street drug” methamphetamine, pharmaceutical companies have realized the need for a change in advertisement. Starting in 1994, stimulating drugs under the names of Adderall ® and Ritalin ® , which are amphetamine constitutes, began being marketed to treat ADD and ADHD. This resulted in a major spike in the profit from this drug in the United States. In fact, in 2012, the ADHD drug industry made upwards of $9 billion and trends show that speculations of profit predict an increase in future years. (“The Surprising History of Adderall”, 2015). The production of this drug, which was increased significantly because of this new market that was established, caused the stigma surrounding the medications to decrease and its prevalence to increase. This caused there to be an increase in misuse as well (“The Surprising History of Adderall”, 2015). But it is important to understand that cognitive enhancers with less of a social stigma are not necessarily more or less safe.
