1. Carnegie's purpose in publishing "Wealth". Include his relevant background information. Andrew Carnegie is one of the most successful industrialists in United States history. Carnegie is the leader of the steel industry and has provided millions of people with opportunities. There is controversy whether Carnegie is a “Robber Baron” or a “Captain of Industry”. Considering all the positive things he provided for this country he will be referred to as a “Captain of Industry”. In his speech “Wealth” he believes that higher classed men like himself should share their wealth with the community. Another reason why Carnegie wrote “Wealth” is the idea of people thinking he was a “Robber Baron” which was a title given to industrialists when they were taking advantage of workers and provides them with little to no stable living conditions. So what Carnegie did to counter this argument was writing this speech. Carnegie stated that in order for others to be successful people of the upper class must be willing to provide the extra help to those in need such as the factory workers and new immigrants coming from Europe. Carnegie used his wealth to transform the lives of many giving away 90% of his wealth to charities, universities, etc. he did not want to be remembered for his wealth but his ideologies of philanthropy. In conclusion Andrew Carnegie’s purpose of writing the essay “Gospel of Wealth” was to promote the ideas to men like himself to not hog their money to themselves but to give it to those who are not fortunate enough to have any.
