Introduction There are many scenarios one might encounter when examining defense perimeters. These include the single router, defense-in-depth, and demilitarized zone (DMZ) methods. Each has a strategic approach geared specifically toward the environment in which they are housed. Questions Address whether each defense method listed above (single router, defense-in- depth, and demilitarized zone) is sufficiently different from all others. Yes there is a sufficient difference between the 3 types of defense. Single router is what is commonly found in a home or SoHo setup, and consists of a single router that connects a client to the internet. All security is done through the router and that is it. The defense-in-depth approach adds a firewall to the picture inbetween the client and the router. This firewall is then configured in addition to the router to add a secondary layer of security. Finally a DMZ approach has a firewall in between the internet and the DMZ, as well as between the DMZ and the client. The DMZ is used as a place to store data from the internet that
