Joni Sarah Joni Tarpenning French 2710 Exam IV 27 June 2017 French 2710 Exam IV 1. “Ridicule”: In what ways does the film “Ridicule” reveal both the importance of the Enlightenment (at least two examples) and the stubborn resistance to change due to aristocratic privilege (at least two examples)? Ridicule (1996) takes place in 1783. This is set in Versailles where most of the Kings nobles resided not doing much work that would benefit France. The majority of the people were aristocrats but at different levels. The Enlightenment is portrayed in this movie. First, the enlightenment proposed logic which was the foundation behind most the wits. In the palace, in order for someone to be liked, they’d have to out-wit another person. If someone made fun of you and you weren’t able to make fun of them better, you’d be ridiculed. Voltaire, a famous enlightenment writer was referenced several times in the film. Another portrayal of the enlightenment was how strong some felt about it. Ponceludons love interest and his mentor’s daughter was willing to marry an old, wealthy man on the accounts that he pays for her research and studies in sciences. Although she did not love him and he was aware of this at a meeting, she was willing to sacrifice herself for education. Although all that were present were aristocrats, they were extremely stubborn and resisted change due to their status. Joni draining his swamp and saving many of the peasants that he cared about. As he is telling other aristocrats of this, he is bombarded by arrogance and one even said that they died poor and boring. Jokes were that serious to these people that even death was ridiculed. Another case was the deaf boy named Paul. Paul was a friend of Bellegrade and loved to play. He wasn’t aware of his actions of consequences.
