It was given in certain circumstances because the name given by his mother Ashima’s grandmother was lost in mail. As they need to give baby’s name before discharge from hospital, Ashoke thought of Nikolai Gogol, Famous Russian author who had a big impact in his life for him to be alive. So, without thinking this as an unusual name, he gave this little boy’s name “Gogol”. “The Nameshake” by Jhumapa lahiri is story of Gogol who struggles with his name identity from childhood to adulthood with give circumstances of cultural struggle being America born Indian child. Gogol joggled with his name from childhood. In his lifeline, Gogol first loved his name; He hated it and changed it to Nikhil after his high-school, and later in life he admired the importance of this name “Gogol”.
