Great post! It was very informative and well laid out. Differentiating between delirium and dementia is a tricky process. Delirium sometimes called acute confusional state and dementia are the most common causes of cognitive impairment, although affective disorders such as depression can also disrupt cognition. Delirium and dementia are separate disorders but are sometimes difficult to distinguish. In both, cognition is disordered In both, cognition is disordered Delirium affects mainly attention, and dementia affects mainly memory. One article that I came across was very helpful in distinguishing the two, especially the most common form of dementia, which is dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB). The interesting thing about delirium and dementia is that they are not only very similar, but they are actually intertwined as well. Having a diagnosis of dementia can cause the risk of experiencing delirium to rise, and the presence of delirium in the absence of a dementia diagnosis can increase the risk of developing dementia (Gore, Vardy, & O’Brien, 2015).

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
